Recommended to Richard by: The movie by my daughter. The Quicklet I found on my own. Consider how they mirror your life. Go and write them. Somewhere, beyond the walls of this cabin, on the far side of the forest where civilization lurks like the army camps of some bloodthirsty horde, a heated discussion is taking place. Look at King! How unique their stories! How bulging their bank accounts!
Avoid the dread MFA, lest you desire cookie-cutter writing style, academic snobbery, and boring stories that, to put it plainly, no one wants to read.
No, it will not make a writer when no writer previously exists. But it will make a given writer create perplexingly complex yet declaratively elite prose. Just give us something to sell. In the first semester of my own MFA journey—that of Stonecoast, a low-residency program hailing from the University of Southern Maine—I had it explained to me that the act of writing very similar to that of working out.
You wake up and, every day, you make yourself write. Then you read. Then you write. Like clockwork.
Manual Quicklet on Inception by Christopher Nolan (Film Guide, Analysis, Review)
Like a treadmill. And Again. You can run for miles and miles and feel like a million bucks when the work is done. Your body hurts. Your gut jiggles. And you question why you even bother. Why not just give up and eat those complex carbs, you think. Why not just give up on it all? How is it possible that ever used to be me?
Some people work out just fine on their own. They run, they jump, with some inherent knowledge of kinesiology and the best ways to keep the body refined. Some lack incentive and therefore require a personal trainer or group to keep them motivated. And some have plenty of motivation, plenty of drive, but no understanding as to how the body works. They require school to teach them, to guide them, so they can go out and maintain their bodies on their own.
I needed the education. I needed the MFA. I wrote every day, sure, and read as much as my brain could handle at the time. But it was the equivalent of lightly jogging with a hoagie in one hand, an ice cream sundae in the other. I had no idea what I was doing.
That I understood the work ethic this hobby requires, the time demand, the sacrifices along the way. For me, Stonecoast was the dream, the Narnia of my adult life. Does one need an MFA to be a successful writer? Not necessarily. Should you seek out an MFA, if you are a writer with professional dreams? It worked for me.
